A writing spider is also sometimes called a "McKinley spider" because when McKinley was running for President somebody claimed they could read his name in the band of silken "writing" across the web of one of these Spiders. They are big. Their body length is close to one inch. They are beautiful. There are many species that make similar orb webs, are brightly colored (typically with bands of bright yellow and pure black), and generally behave in about the same way.
