Milford Sounds most bothersome insect is called a sand-fly. These sandflies have incredibly itchy stings which require insect repellent. The locals also use lavender.
Are you sure you mean the weta? In several visits to Milford Sound/Piopiotahi, I've never been bothered by the wetas. Sand-flies and mosquitoes yes.
