The only usage I am familiar with was a very unusual concept in one of the Tom Swift Jr. Science-fiction stories- possibly it appeared in more than one. The Green Orb was a planet-sized ( okay , maybe asteroid sized) natural object that was actually on closer encounter ( by space-suited astronauts) an extraterrestrial Life-Form. It was, Green in color, hence the name. As it was described in the story it had something of the aspect of a colonial life-form like a Polyp or Jellyfish but had an internal intelligence. How the Orb came into our solar system was never entirely explained. There were various crater-like structures,that opened up like internal blood vessels as the astros explored the orb and drew into telepathic contact with the center nerve center of the Being. It was understood the Orb had no hostile intentions, so all ended well. There were neat touches of more or less Fantastic Voyage and also the Outsized human heart at the Franklin Institute. a neat jab at a very unusual life form, which for obvious reasons, could not land on earth!
