Organo refers to the use of organic compounds for a carbon source, while heter implies the organism does not create its own energy sources. Thus an organoheterotroph gathers energy and carbon from organic substrates. Humans fit this category, as we eat carbohydrates (most often made by photoautotrophs) for the energy held in the chemical bonds and use the carbon to produce new cells among other metabolic processes.
