The function of a leech is to survive; feed, respire, procreate.

Leeches are hermaphrodites (possessing both sets of sexual organs). There are both aquatic and terrestrial types of leech. Different types of leech feed on different things.

Some feed upon blood, and were once used for the purpose of bleeding patients ('leeching') as this was believed to be beneficial.

Nowadays, medical leeches are sparingly used in a few scenarios, particularly during major surgery to relieve venal congestion and promote blood flow.
