Answer 2:
Mosquitoes, gnats, fleas and many other little critters all played a crucial role in the evolution of many species. They transferrred nasty plagues, diseases, infections and other epidemics which kept many species numbers to a minimum until, by natural immunity and selection, won out. New viruses are constantly emerging as have been happenning lately and for the past billion or more years.
It has only been a few millenia since humans began utilising remedial medicines such as herbs, tree bark and other means, that the human race (aptly named) began an unprecedented population increase. With our advanced medical technology, and extended life span, we are the only mamalian species to have conquered most diseases that otherwise would have possibly seen the human population at about one tenth, possibly even one onehundreth of what it is today. Who knows what toll the bird flu, HIV, new strains of influenza, the Plague, and a host of others would have wreaked.
So, the natural purpose of these critters is now largely defunct with humans, and, in return, we humans are killing everything on the planet, either directly or indirectly.
Food for thought.
They help stop overpopulation.
