I'm not sure but I saw one on my doorstep today and my girlfriend saw one on the tire of her car an hour later. Neither of us have seen this creature in over twenty year or so. Mystics believe it is a sign of good luck, bad luck, a need for change or even a pregnancy in the household. So I don't know. Maybe they are just over-breeding. When I was a kid, it was illegal to kill one. Like, a $500 fine because of their asset to eradicating other evil insects and possibly felons of the neighborhood. I don't know but I think it's a good thing.

Is the praying mantis an endangered species?

not at all. They are however, difficult to see in their natural environment. in western PA. they are everywhere. The best place to find them, if you are patient is on plants with long slender leaves like Japanese iris's. They blend in so well that to see them look down the leaf shoots and you will see their legs. Where there is one there are usually several as they follow the pheromones of other mantis's and stay fairly close to the egg box.

Do praying mantis eat their mate?

well... when a female and a male mantis mate and are "done" IF the female is like starving( only when starving) she actually will eat her mate. the male will not eat the female unless also starving but that is more unlikely then a female eating a male. if you keep two mantis's in one cage or habitat, one might eat the other.
