What kind of bee is a large black bee with a white spot on its abdomen and kills yellow jackets?

I suspect it might be a "bald-faced hornet", which is actually a wasp. They have a white face and white stripes on the body that look like a spot from a distance. They are very, very territorial and aggressive to ANYTHING that comes near a hive.

They are called carpenter bees or woods bees. They drill holes in unpainted wood. I don't know if they can't sting or won't but I have never been stung and I have given them plenty of opportunities. I fill their holes with putty and then paint the wood. I don't like exterminating because they help the environment (except the bare wood) and they don't sting me. I have tried spraying them with wasp and hornet spray but didn't kill them. They are pesty in that they will hover around you and seem to try to intimidate you with their boldness.
