Sea stars (also called starfish) live in marine habitats where they move across the ocean floor on what are called tube feet. Some sea stars are carnivores while others are omnivores. In either case, most sea stars have what is called a cardiac stomach. They are able to bring their stomach out of their body and engulf their prey before consuming it. Sea stars can produce either sexually, where it takes a male and a female to create young, or asexually, where a single individual can produce both sperm and egg. Reproduction takes place through spawning; essentially a female will release unfertilized eggs and a male will release sperm to fertilize those eggs. Certain species of starfish have the ability to regenerate a lost arm. This is helpful because if a predator tears off one of the arms of the starfish, it is not a death sentence for the animal.
