I believe it is the Blue Jay. aka Stellar Jay [edit: evandenbroecke] Ok first off, when are you Americans going to learn that Canada has Provinces, NOT states. British Columbia's Provincal bird is the Stellar's Jay, but is comonly confused even here as a Blue Jay, probably because of the steller's jay marking of blue and black. Blue Jays are white chested and have more interesting markings on their wings body and head. [edit: squeakygerbil] Actually Canada has Provinces & Territories.
One of the most famous photographs in Canadian history is that of the 'last spike' being driven into the Canadian Pacific Railway tie at Craigellachie, British Columbia, by Sir Donald Smith on November 7, 1885. Beside the Trans-Canada Highway between Salmon Arm and Revelstoke, there is a small memorial marking the exact spot of the final link in Canada's transcontinental railway There were actually two so-called 'last spikes.' Smith bent the second-last one while trying to drive it in, and a replacement had to be found before the ceremony, and the railroad, could be completed. There are also a few slightly different photographs of the event.

Based on your description, the spider you are most likely referring to is the white-marked jumping spider (Dendryphantes varians). This species is commonly found in Pennsylvania and is known for the distinctive white heart-shaped marking on its back. White-marked jumping spiders are harmless and are beneficial for controlling pest insects in gardens.
No. The term "Tower" refers to the Tower of London- a source of arms for the British military. Typical marking would be on the lock.
