What will kill springtail insects?

spring tailsSpring tails is a general term for about 14 different insects. They live in great numbers, are attracted to wet spaces because they feed on mold and mildew. I read this on an exterminators website. The advice is to remove the source of moisture, dry the area with fans.

My question: What insecticide to use to kill them?

Answer:Any over the counter insecticide for general pest control will work. However, it is always better to address the problem on the outside of your home than on the inside.

springtail insects feed off of decaying organic material. I would think if you find the food source (mold, drain clogs, etc.) and deal with the problem, the bugs would seek out an alternate source. If the bugs are outside, I have no clue.

If you have springtails outside under your mulch pile or in the garden, then you don't want to get rid of them. They eat mold, mildew, fungus and decaying organic matter which is found in moist areas, and that's what you want in the garden.

However, if those springtails are inside the house, I can certainly see where you would want them gone.

Springtail Insect Deterrents

• The critters like moisture - a dehumidifier will help in the home, as well as checking on leaky pipes. Once the infested area is dried, these guys will desert your home and go looking for some other place with a lot of moisture, which is essential to their lives.
• There are several slow release chemical controsl that has been very helpful when applied outside the home. Use them in areas of organic buildup (wood piles, mulch, pine straw, flower gardens, paving stones).
• For inside the home, until the moisture is gone, use the botanical insceticide pyrethrins, which will not harm children or pets. It just hates insects, though.
