Where did bed bugs come from?

They come from an egg laid by an adult female bedbug when that egg hatches. Female bedbugs lay up to 12 eggs every day. Wherever the bedbug egg hatches a nymph bedbug is born there. The nymph can detect the breath of anybody within about 50 metres or more who is asleep. The nymph will instinctively crawl towards there. When it finds the bed where the breath is coming from it will climb up and into it to try to have a meal off the person sleeping by sipping his or her blood. Once it has had its meal it needs to have four more blood meals on subsequent nights before it becomes an adult bedbug, so it will find a hiding place in that bed or else as close as it can to where that person is asleep so it can easily return on subsequent nights to suck the blood of whoever is sleeping in that bed again and again on future nights. Once it has become an adult bedbug, if it is a female it can then lay its own eggs and so start a bedbug family so many more bedbug nymphs may be born in or near that bed, and hence the bed becomes infested with bedbugs.

AnswerThe commonest place bedbugs live is in the folds and crevices or the inside of mattresses in somebody's bed or else in the bed linen or the bed's structure. Other places include carpeting, cracks in walls and upholstered furniture. Bedbugs also may often live in wood furniture, behind electrical outlets, under wallpaper, inside books and inside picture frames, clocks, electronics, and smoke detectors. Bedbug eggs will also be laid on hard surfaces associated with these places, but even more commonly the eggs may often be laid in people's luggage when they are on holiday or on their way back home. That is a very frequent way a bedbug problem first starts in a family's home because when the eggs hatch in the luggage, the newly born bedbug nymph crawls out during the night and is attracted by the CO2 breath of anybody asleep for its first blood meal, so will instinctively crawl to that bed and after the first meal then take up occupancy either in the bed or near it. They are very industrious little creatures.

They are brought into a home in various ways, most commonly because somebody on holiday stayed somewhere like a hotel with a bedbug problem, and while there one or more female bedbugslaid eggs in their luggage or clothing which will be stuck in there but which the owner does not see or know about. Another common way is they come in via bedbug eggs previously laid either in second hand furniture or a second hand used mattress bought and then brought into a new home. When that person comes home after their holiday the luggage may or may not be unpacked or else the eggs may be in tiny crevices in the furniture or the seams of a second hand mattress or second hand bed. The eggs hatch and thus one or more bedbug nymphs will be born during the night. As soon as nymphs are born they want food. Bedbugs have on key ability. they can detect the breathing of anybody asleep over some considerable distance. So once they detect somebody asleep's breath they will instinctively crawl to where that breath is coming from even if it means going up stairs or along a long passageway. Once in the bedroom where the breath originated each bedbug will climb up into the bed and crawl on to that person's limbs while they are asleep. The bedbug first injects an anaesthetic into them so they become numb and do not feel anything there. The bedbug then inserts a tiny tube and starts rather like a vacuum cleaner to draw out blood and so have the first meal off the sleeping person in the bed and in most cases while the person is still fast asleep blissfully unaware what is happening because the anaesthetic has made it numb . That person has thus become a bedbug host but does not yet know that. When they awaken the anaesthetic will have worn off and they may feel itchy and perhaps see a red rash on their arm and feel like scratching it but otherwise may think nothing of it The bedbug after its meal in the bed will by then then be safely in its new hiding place base somewhere very near to the known source of food (i.e in or near the host's bed). The nymphs are likely come back for more meals from the host's blood on following nights. In time the nymphs become adult bedbugs and then more and more bedbug eggs get laid in or near that bed. So more bedbugs are born in or near that bed the host gets more and more bites all over his or her body! An a bedbug infestation is now starting to intensify, perhaps before the host realises there is a bedbug problem associated with his or her bed, but then getting rid of the bedbug infestation can be extremely difficult.
