Once a year ant queens and males are born. both of them have wings so that they can find each other and mate. If they are done the male dies, because he's done is job and the queen flies away. Where ever she lands she is gonna start a colony. She doesn't need the wings anymore so they are eaten by her young or just fall off.
So the short answer is because eventually she doesn't need them anymore.
