Apparently there have been many attempts by snails over the years to find themselves alternate domiciles. The Sargasso sea snail has adapted itself to its marine environment over hundreds of thousands of years. When they tried to return to land they found that they had become addicted to sea salt so they were loathe to venture too far from the seaside and thereby fell prey to various predatory crustacean creatures and birds. Their more intrepid relatives made a bee-line for the nearest garden, finding it to be a safer place as they could hide behind tree trunks, secrete themselves under under fallen leaves, ooze their way into hollow logs etc.
