I don't have a definitive answer, but having lived in California for 1/3 of a century I have made some observations. Everybody knows that it never rains in California (in the summer, anyway). The rain is a winter/spring thing. And indeed, there are plenty of bugs in the spring, while the vegetation is still green. They seem to disappear as things dry out. My theory is that the lack of water kills them off. I sure don't miss them - it sure is nice to go camping in summer and not have to worry about mosquitos!

Why does the west coast of the US experience volcanic activity and earthquakes while the east coast does not?

The west coast of the US lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where several tectonic plates meet. This intense tectonic activity results in volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. In contrast, the east coast is located further away from these tectonic plate boundaries, leading to fewer volcanic and seismic events.

How would spraying a yard with chemical pesticides to control insects be most likely to affect the diversity of insects found in it?

Spraying a yard with chemical pesticides can harm non-target insect species, disrupt the balance of the ecosystem, and lead to a decrease in insect diversity. It can also create resistance in insect populations and eliminate beneficial insects along with pests, ultimately reducing the overall diversity of insects found in the yard.
