Like any burning object, there is a chance of fire. However, a stick on set over a incense tray is a very small haArd, indeed. The ashes are safe to touch even before they hit the tray, and the burning part is able to be snuffed between two wet fingers. I do it all the time.

That being said, fire is fire. Don't take needless chances. Nobody wants to wake up to a house fire, no it matter how good it smells.
