As game designing today can vary by so many means, from being everything to a indie developer who accepts donations from his fans, to a massive corporation such as Dice or Valve.

As an indie developer (not officially hired by a company), working part time could mean that you are working part time at a real job. This can sometimes relieve the stress that accumulates after sitting for days straight in front of the computer. It also generates a nice little net worth for you to spend more time on your game.

As a professional game designer, working part time would be frankly a quite hard thing to do as game developers tend to make their life revolve around games and technology related interests. If you were to work part time, you would lose the sole experience of absorbing the spirit of the group or company that you're working with.

With this being said, I would still like to say that the game industry today is not a firm structure of matters. If you can find a part time job handing game developers coffee, while perhaps taking care of their website for the time being, I would say that sounds pretty realistic in an open world of games and game production!
