How do you answer 'What are you currently looking for in a salary'?

This question often comes up in job interviews. Most job sites recommend that where possible, you redirect this question back to the interviewer:

"I'm looking for a salary commensurate with my worth to this company. What kind of a salary package can you offer?"

If the interviewer insists on pinning you down to a specific number, your best strategy is to price yourself at what you feel you'd be worth to the company in that position. This may mean losing out to someone else who is willing to settle for a lower pay rate, but it also means that you won't feel trapped or squeezed into a salary level lower than what you expect or deserve.

One final strategy would be to agree to a lower starting salary, but negotiate for a review and pay raise within three months, after you've had time to build a track record and prove your worth.
