How do you answer assessment questions on job applications?

There is a great book called "What Color is Your Parachute?" by Richard Bolles. He says that whenever the interviewers asks a question like that, or when they ask "What is your biggest fault?" That you should turn it into a positive ("I am too organized for my own good" or "I consider myself late if I'm not 5 minutes early"). So I would list only positive things about myself and my skills (self starter, quick learner). Definately leave out anything that would give them a reason to not hire you. Read the book, it's great!

There are a few key points to include when you write a self description for a job interview. You need to highlight all your strengths and skills that you have honed over the years. Most of the content should be in line with the job interview expectations.

I would suggest you start off by giving a very brief career history and have the answer to this question rehearsed over and over again before you go for the interview.

You need to always make it relevant to the job you are interviewing for. e.g. if you are going for a job in retail and your last job was in an office then you need to draw out what your transferrable skills are. Things like:

Good customer skills

Punctual

Reliable and honest

Strong team player

Never take time off sick etc

This can be a tricky question if you don't think through your answer beforehand. It is however a great opportunity to sell your strengths for the job to the interviewer. What were they looking for in the advert? This is where you can highlight why you are the right person. So for example

- I'm good at planning and organising this has enable me to ensure I deliver projects on time

-I have strong interpersonal skills and this has enabled me to build great relationships with customers

- I have a lot of experience at managing online marketing databases
