How do you get an effective job interview?

A job interview is something to prepare for. You know the job (and associated skills) that you are applying for, you know the company's personality (or you should have found out) so make your answer make your seem to fit. In this question about hobbies:

• If you are trying for a job which requires detailed careful work, think of hobbies you have that require this skill set (stamp collecting, woodcarving, painting)
• If the job is out doors talk bout camping, hiking or biking.

Having worked in career guidance for over 12 years and in addition to working in management and having interviewed thousands of people over the years, the one main piece of advice I would give is 'BE YOURSELF'.

If you try and be someone you think that employer wants, the job may not be the right one for you. If, on the other hand, they like you for YOU, and you feel you struck a rapport with the interviewers, then there is a match.

You need to ensure you research the company thoroughly, know who the key personalities are, their mission statement etc. You must also be honest, i.e. if you don't really understand what they are asking for, tell them and they will rephrase the question.
