You perform the negative pressure check and the lens remains deflected after holding your breath. Put your hands over the air inlets (the M17 mask has two; other masks have only one) so no air can get in, and inhale really hard. If the mask collapses to your face, and it doesn't leak air, you have achieved a proper fit.
For a proper fit of a protective mask, you should take a Fit test. If the mask fits properly it will not allow air from the outside into the facepiece no matter the position of the head.
