You would have to work hard at your volunteer job and show a willingness to learn. You would also need fixed hours to show that you are responsible and do not take your job position lightly. If you're willing to wait, a Bachelor's degree in Psychology will get you an internship as some sort of entry level therapist / intake specialist. I would also volunteer while getting that, preferably at the place you want to get a job. The internship will be unpaid for up to a year. But once you get in a place like that, you're in for as long as you're willing to show respect and work hard. If you want to go for the real job and real pay, you will need a Psy.D or Ph.D in Psychology (where you can specialize). You will also have an internship at the end of your Doctoral Degree, and that may or may not be paid. If your school does not offer a AA with emphasis, I would get an AA in General Studies and take all the Psych classes you can. Meanwhile, you can volunteer OR work as a receptionist at the place you'd like to work. You will always get considered for a position before the public if you already work there, because they already know you.
