It took me 4 years to complete my PhD, but I was lucky. I really had no hang-ups in my research. There were people in my program who had been there 6 years with no results.

Receiving the doctorate is dependent upon how hard you want to work for it and unfortunately, in some cases, pure luck with experimental success.
