If you have completed the coursework outside the professional phase nursing courses, it will still take two years to complete because of the sequential nature of the program. If you find a diploma program that is shorter, I would not recommend it if you don not already have an existing bachelor's degree. In time, you may decide to go on for the bachelor's in nursing (BSN). Still, if this is your passion, then I would recommend you go for the nursing degree. Today, there are so many opportunities for nurses which are very much in demand.

Yes, you have to be a RN to be a NICU nurse. You can become a RN one of two ways. ADN or BSN route; 2 years and four years, respectively. The ADN or BSN is the degree you receive after completing school. The RN is the title you receive after finishing school and taking the NCLEX. Some hospitals are starting to phase out ADN nurses or you have to agree to go back to school within a certain amount of time to do a RN to BSN bridge program. It really just depends on your situation what route you take. Do lots of research into multiple programs to find out what works best for you. Also start volunteering in a pediatric facility to see if it's something you really want to do.
The qualifications required to register for BS nursing is to have a four-year degree that also prepares nurses for graduate-level education. The first 2 years consist out of a BSN program and the other 2 years in nursing courses.
