A general practitioner must first attend an undergraduate school and then a medical school. After graduating from medical school, he/she must complete an intership and residency in family medicine. You need either an undergraduate degree or the 90 required hours of pre-requisites to apply for medical school, so figure 3-5 years at a college or university. Then, medical school takes 4 years. Internship and residency for family medicine is between 3 to 4 years after medical school. So after high school, it's about 10 to 13 years.

You also may want to take additional courses in the area of your major, or related to it. So, my advice would be to plan on at least 10 years, know exactly what you want to do when you are finished, get your GE (general ed.) courses out of the way first, then focus all of your energy on completing your degrees. Of course, you will also want to begin gaining practical experience in your field of interest long before you even begin working on your doctorate. A doctorate with no practical application is useless. If you can get an internship as a freshman, do it!
