Most textile workers toiled for 12 to 14 hours a day and half a day on Saturdays; the mills were closed on Sundays. Typically, mill girls were employed for nine to ten months of the year, and many left the factories during part of the summer to visit back home. They probably didnt want to work at all. A regular 8 hours would've been better for them

Eight workers can build a cabin in 60 hours. How many workers are needed if the cabin is to be built in 32 hours?

To determine how many workers are needed to build the cabin in 32 hours, we can use the formula: (workers) x (time) = constant. In this case, the constant is the same amount of work needed to build the cabin. So, 8 workers x 60 hours = 480 worker-hours. To build the cabin in 32 hours, we divide the constant (480 worker-hours) by the new time (32 hours) to find that 15 workers are needed to build the cabin in 32 hours.

How to calculate total working man hours?

To calculate total working man hours, multiply the number of workers by the number of hours each worker contributes over a specific period. For example, if you have 10 workers each working 40 hours a week, the total working man hours for that week would be 10 workers x 40 hours = 400 man hours. If you want to calculate for multiple weeks, simply multiply the weekly total by the number of weeks worked.

Why do you think Sarah bagley believed she had to organize a labor reform union rather than just asking the mill owners to make a change?

Because the mill owners did not want to change their ways. They believed their female workers should be grateful for their jobs and not demand better pay or working conditions. It was a time (1830s and 1840s) when women could not vote and had few rights. In fact, the mill owners did raise wages for the men, but not for the women. So, Sarah Bagley and some of her co-workers decided the only way to get the mill owners to take their demands seriously was to organize, which meant forming a union.

Why would the grocery store you work at hire new people and cut hours of the ones working already why not just give current employees more hours?

While only the store management knows for sure, there is a general rule. Businesses would rather have multiple part time workers rather than full time workers. They don't want to pay overtime for the part time workers and they don't want to have to pay for benefits for full time workers.
