Nuns" mission or career path varies according to the order involved but most nuns are in either one of two (Apostolates) as they are known. these are the teaching apostolate- in the schools and such things as Sunday schools, etc and the Health care apostolate- hospitals, Blind schools, handicapped centers, etc. there are a very limited array of other occupational fields such as the nearly extinct but useful Logistics Apostolate- the sisters of St. Zita were primarily concerned with distributing religious articles to ocean-going ships that had chapels. on a more mundane scale some of the cloistered nuns manufacture religious articles such as priestly robes, habits, etc and some times these are sold for profit. I would say at least half of all active ( as opposef to those retired or disabled) are in the teaching apostolate, and most of the remainder in the health care apostolate, with a sprinkling of (other career paths).
