The amount of money you make depends on the state you are working in and what shift you will be working. On average a nursing assistant makes about $10.00/hr with a shift differential for evening and night shift. The responsibilities for the nursing assistant includes feeding the patient if pt is unable to feed themself, giving the pt a bedbath or shower and or assisting the pt if able to do themself, changing diapers, providing peri-care( includes washing of private areas and applying protective ointment to prevent skin breakdown), repositioning the bedbound pt every 2hrs or as needed with pillows and using elbow and heel protectors if necessary, changing of bed linens, emptying catheter drainage bags, changing of colostomy bags(depends on employers guidelines), dressing the pt or assisting, providing oral care, brushing or combing pts hair if pt unable to do, transferring pt with into wheelchair or geri-chair(in some cases will need to use mechanical lift if pt is too heavy to transfer), checking pt every 2 hours to see if pts diaper needs to be changed in some cases may need to change gown/pajamas or bed linens if soiled. These duties are primarily performed in the nursing home setting but in some cases you will perform in the hospital setting also. I am sure their are more duties that I am leaving out but these are the primary ones. We could not make it without the assistance of the nurses aide and many times forget to say thank you. So from a nurses view I say Thank You!!! I hope I have been helpful and good luck!!!!
