Most Federal Park employees and this includes Park Rangers are on the federal government's GS or General Schedule pay system. The Park positions are not all that high except for supervisors and the really highly paid ones sit behind a desk and you will never see them. As federal employees, their pension is based on years of service and is 1 percent of pay for every year served unless they serve 20 or more and are 60 or older at retirement (30 and 55 also qualifies) in which case they get 1.1 percent per year of service of their highest pay averaged over their last 36 months of service. As most of these park rangers earn around $40-50K per year, a 30 year pension is generally in the $12-15K annually. Of course, there is a move to make it a 5 year average and this will reduce all federal employees pensions by a small amount each year.

A pension is not considered a public good; it is a private financial arrangement designed to provide individuals with income in retirement. Public goods are characterized by being non-excludable and non-rivalrous, meaning their consumption does not diminish availability for others, such as national defense or public parks. Pensions, on the other hand, are typically funded through individual contributions or employer plans, making them exclusive to those who participate.
