To become a veterinarian is to complete Graduate studies. That means you have to go through undergraduate studies first.

A bachelor of Science with a major in animal health is usually recommended, and that takes 4 years to complete. Some universities (like U of A) offer a condensed program. That is a 2 year pre-vet course.

Veterinarian studies itself is a 4 year program, which are to be completed after the undergraduate degree is awarded.

In total, the years it takes to be a vet is between 6 and 8, although taking the 8 is recommended.

I know this is applicable for Canada (or at least Alberta) but I'm not sure about the United States.

It depends which country you are in and which course you undertake.

Generally an undergraduate BVSc will be 4 years long.

A graduate course, such as a DVM might be 3-4 years long.

The graduate DVM at Melbourne Uni is 4 years long (although if you do your undergraduate BSc at Melbourne Uni you can become a vet in a total of 6 years instead of 7).
