For instance, the median salary for a dentist in the Charleston, Columbia, Spartanburg, Florence and Sumter areas is between $120,000 to $125,000. Compare that salary to the median of $134,000 for a dentist in Rock Hill. The less populated and more rural areas will show a smaller salary as compared to these. Other dental jobs such as Dental Assistant and Dental Hygienist will show smaller salaries but higher ones in the same locations as the dentist's higher salaries. A Dental Hygienist will earn a higher salary with an average of over $60,000 while the Dental Assistant average salary would be $35,000 to $40,000. A dentist will always be needed. With so many technological advances in the field of dentistry, the dentist is able to do much more now to keep a patient's teeth at a much older age than before. The dentist needs to know about the teeth and also the gums and oral health in general. A degree in dentistry is needed and may need two to four years of experience before being licensed to practice in the state of South Carolina, and also the entire country. The Dental Assistant will prepare the needed instruments and tools for a scheduled patient. By working directly with the dentist during the procedure, the assistant needs to learn the procedures and oral surgery so that the proper equipment and tools are ready to be used. The hygienist does the job of cleaning the teeth while using the proper instruments. This includes cleaning accretions, stains, calcareous deposits from the teeth and also below the gum margins. The hygienist will then tell the dentist if any decay or cavities are present.
