He doesn't, book 7 accually comes before the events in book #5 and #6. He achieves the silver oakleaf in book seven and in book #5 Will is already a Ranger

The Ranger's Apprentice series is about Will, a small orphan child, who wants to become a knight. However, certain circumstances change when instead he becomes a Ranger, which is the land of Araluen's 'police'. The series is about his apprenticeship, his missions, his lover Alyss and all the wild and wonderful people he meets. The author, John Flanagan, is also writing another series, the Brotherband chronicles, which takes place simultaneously to Ranger's Apprentice but is situated in Skandia.
Book 10 in the Ranger's Apprentice series comes out April 19th 2011.
