The United States is not the Richest in the world. GDP (Purchasing Power Parity) - #1 United States $14,820,000,000,000 GDP (real groth rate) - #1 Macau %15.00, #180 United States %1.30 GDP (per capita - ppp) - #1 Liechtenstein $118,000, #10 United States $47,000 Debt #1 United States $12,250,000,000,000 Tied at 202 Liechtenstien and Macau at $0.00 Stock of Money - #1 European Union $5,679,000,000,000 (Liechtenstein), #5 United States $1,596,000,000,000 So I would say Liechtenstein is the richest country in the world. They have the richest people, no debt and more money than the United States in the bank. Info found here - https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/docs/rankorderguide.html Oh my this is funny! More money in the bank?? I guess our dear writer does not understand how fiat currency systems work. The number 3 man at Microsoft has more money than the entire country of Lichtenstein. At the top where it counts the United States dominates the list of wealthiest people in the world with more billionaires than any other country. Their are 8 million millionaires in the United States and the median family net worth is $300,000. Per capita PPP can be misleading as it includes the entire population multiplied into the GDP. National wealth would be a far better measure. The sovereign worth of all assets held by US citizens is in the range of 70 to 100 trillion dollars. The united States represents 20% of the world economy and its currency is the reserve currency of the planet. The financial markets of the United States are the deepest and most liquid and when investors are looking for safety no instrument on the planet can match US Treasuries. The United States is by far the wealthiest country on the planet. Response to the dear rude writer above, Yes I do understand how the system works. If you would read the info from the link I put below and read the info from it you would see that the people as a whole make more money than the people as a whole here in the United States. I was not talking about millionares or billionares. And just because whe print more money does not mean we are richer. It just means we have more money printed. Until we pay that massive debt of ours we are flat broke. And I wasn't talking about who's financial system is stronger either. The question was Why is the US the richest country in the world? And the answer is we are broke. We have no money. We print money. And give that printed money away. And we are just digging ourselves into a deeper whole that we will never dig out of. Now we may have more influence in the financial markets, politicaly, and militarily but that does not make us richer. Dear writer. It is true that the US national debt is approaching $12 trillion, noone denies that but compared with other industrialized countries the US debt is not disproportionate. The money that the United States prints is in no way a measure of its wealth. Most of the wealth heald by US families is in real estate and investments. Even after the decline in Real Estate since 2007 personal residences in the United States are valued at over $47 trillion dollars. These are real hard assets that have nothing to do with paper money. May I point out as well that even with the huge debt load noone has lost faith in the credit of the US government. As the world economy became volatille soveriegn wealth poured into US treasuries as the only "safe bet" in town. Let me just bottom line it for you, since the collapse of the USSR the United States has enjoyed a status that no nation in the history of our world has enjoyed. If the United States doesnt grow then the world grows very very slowly.
