I have never heard of that and I wouldn't think so. And I really hope not. If you are applying for decent companies, your name won't matter. I agree. It's the experience and skills that employers are paying and looking for, not a name. As long as these two stand out and compliment the position, a reputable employer won't dismiss you because of a hard to pronounce name---might actually catch their eye at first glance. I believe that it is against the law to refuse someone a job based on anything not strictly job-related, such as how many kids they have, how old they are, their religion, or their name. Of course there are ways around everything, but if I had enough evidence to prove they refused me a job, i would most definitely take action. While it's illegal to discriminate against a candidate on such trivial grounds, it can have a psychological effect on the interviewer. If they feel embarrassed because they can't pronounce your name, then it puts them in a negative mood right off the bat and that means you're going to have to work harder to make a positive impression overall. If your name is easy to pronounce, but the pronunciation is not immediately obvious from the spelling on your resume (like many Gaelic names) you can help yourself out by introducing yourself aloud. Even if they've got a resume in front of them saying you're Eoghan Laoghaire, it'll go in your favour if you open by saying "I'm Owen Leary, I'm here about the consultant position." If your name is difficult to pronounce to somebody without your background (the Asian 'ng' sound and the Welsh 'll' defeat many English speakers) then see if you can Anglicise it or simplify it in some way. If you get the job you can spend some time teaching people how to say your name properly, but the interview process will be smoothed out if you interrupt the "Hello Miss Vykouschti... Vychhousty..." with a swift "Please, call me Vicky." Unfortunately, we as humans pre judge most of our lives. If you do not get a job you should never think it is due to any type of racism (unless you are going to sue, which is very hard to prove without both a great lawyer and internal help from the company you are applying for) it has no purpose other than to make you mad and aggrivated. MOve on and thank who ever that you do not have to work for a person that is that nignorant....lol. I certainly agree with"While it's illegal to discriminate against a candidate on such trivial grounds, it can have a psychological effect on the interviewer....." That is probably the best answer here. As a tip, I would like to add that if you have a nickname, you may want to add it to your resume. Such as: 'Yilei "Lee" Gynu' or 'Olubukola "Buki"Makato'
