I put one of my engineers to work reducing the total number of nuts, bolts, screws and washers in our computer assembly line, as part of a much larger cost reduction effort that I was responsible for. He was able to reduce labor costs dramatically, usually at the cost of just a penny or two in parts. In some cases he reduced labor while reducing material costs. The overall project was a huge success and saved many millions of dollars and helped us keep a production line and its workers in the United States.
