What are some reasons why young people find it difficult to find a job?

Most of the time, people that are doing the hiring might want someone who is older and not looking for just a summer job. Also other teens that work give a bad name to the good ones. Alot of teens are late for work or they just don't do a good job. That is some of the many reasons why it is so hard for teens to get a good job.

In my opinion, even after 35 years old, it is harder to find a job. I think health costs is a big issue. Most employers assume, as you get older, you will require more health costs/insurance. Also, there is the perception (I believe incorrect), that younger people will be more aggressive and more productive. Also, there is the notion, your skill erode as you age. While employers will never admit it, I know of several people, very competent and spry, be passed over even when the employer wants the applicant to have long term experience for a specific job. Often they will hire the younger person who has little or no experience, despite the job description asking for an experienced person.

• They choose to stay home with their children or family
• They are sick, disabled, or otherwise unable to work
• There are a shortage of jobs in their area
• They are lazy, or have no motivation
• They are dedicating all of their time to getting a better education
• Their spouses make enough money that they do not have to
• They do not have job skills
• They do not have interview skills
• They have a criminal history that makes getting a job more difficult
• They have other sources of income, and do not need to work

Federal child labor laws put the age limit at 16 to protect people from taking advantage of uderage workers. When I was in high school a person had to be 18 to get a job so it has gotten younger.
