The skills and knowledge required depends on how far up in the oil and gas field you would like to go. For a roustabout (entry level worker) you need to be willing to work long hours in the hot sun, be accurate and have knowledge of your basic tools. If you would like to go into management, you will need to know how to use basic computer applications (such as Word). You will need project manager skills as well as quality control knowledge, your commercial driver's license (CDL), First Aid training, electricians license, on-site mining and construction experience. You may also be required to take a safety management course. To reach the executive level in the oil/gas field you will need to get your Petroleum Engineering degree.
