The system of checks and balances in the untied states government provides for a robust government, where no branch of government can overpower the others.
The Judicial branch is the Supreme Court. Their responsibility is to interpret the laws.
The Executive branch is the President. The President's responsibility is to enforce the laws. He also has a veto, which can block a bill from becoming a law.
The Legislative branch is the Congress. The Congress creates laws, and determines how to finance the operations of the government. They can override a veto if there is enough consent. Congress is also split into two parts - The House of Representatives, and the Senate.
This is a very simplified version of the government, but I hope this answers your question!
