Detectives at a murder scene look for evidence. They study the overall scene, first; they even leave the body where it rests while the staff just looks over the scene without touching anything. This is taking in the overall picture. Then, one detective draws the scene; another might take photographs. When they finally move into the scene, they look at the state of the body, its positioning, how the body lies, what is nearby, etc.

Specific evidence varies for each scene. Some types of evidence include:

• footprints - this is why they hang back and look over the scene so they notice footprints first
• fingerprints - may not be obvious
• impressions left on bedding
• blood, blood drops, blood splatter
• murder weapon(s)
• gun and spent bullet cartridges
• knife or knives; knife tip
• evidence of sexual assault; semen
• condom wrapper
• cigarette butts
• cigarette pack
  
• victim's purse or wallet
• missing items of value
• trash that might contain fingerprints
