What college education do you need to become a rancher?

Knowledge of cattle (everything from health, calving and breeding to behaviour and nutrition), pasture management and forage production, primarily. Some would also add that a rancher should have knowledge of horses, horsemanship and roping, but there are ranches around that can operate without using horses.

Back then, no education necessary, you learned on the job. Nowadays, on the job is good, but college education is very helpful. Knowing how to be your own vet (if a long distance from one), your own bookkeeper, your yardman, etc. Hiring on in the summer time if you are a student is very helpful.

Your real knowledge is being part of the family of a rancher. Which was my father's hobby. Horses and cattle. Tried sheep, more problem then they were worth. Always finding or making a hole in the fence.

A lot of ranchers don't have university or college degrees behind them; most of them obtain the status of "rancher" by buying or inheriting a lot of land and raising cattle and horses on it. They also have to manage it like it's a piece of wildlife land, with conservation efforts to keep this rangeland for wildlife, and at the same time manage it (and the cattle) as land to make a profit off of. You can have a lawyer's degree, a business degree or even a doctor's degree and still be a rancher.
