Depends on the tools and the type of geologist.

The standard kit for most geologists consists of:

(1) Rock hammer, used to break open rocks and examine their fresh surfaces,

(2) Compass, used to navigate in the field and measure the orientation and angle at which rocks are projecting out of the earths surface.

(3) Magnet, to test the magnetic properties of the rocks and help in identifying them.

(4) A bottle of hydrochloric acid, to aid in the ID of rocks that contain calcium carbonate

(5) Notebook and pencil to record observations.

(6) Field vest and or pack to carry all the gear.

The above list might vary depending on whether the geologist specializes in "soft rock" (oil and gas), "hard rock" (minerals and precious metals), Hydrology (water), or Paleontology (dinosaur bones).
