1. Complete all the pre-requisite courses for the College of Veterinary Medicine you would like to attend.

2. Get "veterinary experience" hours, in which you work for, volunteer for or shadow a working vet so you know what you are applying for.

3. Get "animal experience" hours, in which you work with as many different species of animals as you can so you have some idea how to handle them.

4. Find at least two, and preferrably three, veterinarians who can and will write good recommendations for you.

5. Apply to one or more Colleges of Veterinary Medicine - this is an exacting process and only about 1 in 3 vet school students are accepted on their first application.

6. Complete the course of study at the College of Veterinary Medicine and graduate.

7. Take and pass the North American Veterinary Licensing Exam (NAVLE, also called the National Boards).

8. Take and pass the State Vet Board Exam for the state(s) you wish to practice in.

9. Apply for a job and accept a position.

10. Make sure you have your degree, your license, your accreditation and your experience ready to start on day one.
