The head janitor assigns work to the assistants, or they work alongside each other or together to complete tasks. Year-round, janitors sweep (broom clean) or vacuum, dust, empty trash, and tidy up rooms. They may paint the inside or outside of the building during summer months. Some janitors are responsible for heating and maintenance of equipment such as boilers, air conditioning, etc.

Likely one of the more unpleasant tasks is cleaning toilets and latrines. But the work goes fast and deodorizers and sanitizers give a pleasant smell to the work.

Working under a janitor gives a good basic work experience for kids and young adults just beginning their work history. It also offers steady work to millions of people at a good wage.
