You should find out the average salary for the position for which you are applying, if possible. You should then base your range around that, also taking into consideration your current or last salary.

Salary depends on the job in question and how skilled you are at that job. I'd ask around people who have already been hired - check a couple companies - discretely, of course, since many companies don't want their employees to discuss their salary range. Ask other people with your relative skill level in your job what they're making, consider the companies they're working for versus the company you're trying to get hired by, and go about 1k per year up from whatever you come up with. (going too far up will make you look greedy, going too far below will make you look like you're unsure.) Three safe answers for this question when filling out an application are either: a) minimum wage (only if you are willing to accept that) OR

b) "negotiable"

c) if the wages are posted somewhere, put the range of wages listed in the posting! :)
