If you are wanting to be a Bartender its a great job! You Make good money cash each day also a check every week or 2 weeks. I always wanted to bartend .. so my friend recommend a great bartending course/book to me I ordered it . It cost me 37.00 . Now I am working at a great neighborhood bar. Its only temp though! Iam going back to collage and I plan on working at a bar in my collage town. But I would recommend bartendingexposed.com to anyone who wants to learn how to bartend. I'll try to answer this as best as I can. There are many parts to bartending, I'll try to cover the main points.

If you are in a regular setting or more of a passing trade where you may not see the customers again. But serving drinks is the main priority no matter where you are making revenue for the bar that you are working in.

Knowing the drinks you are serving getting the right drinks for the right customers, if your venue has a relaxed atmosphere the customer may be more inclined to suggestion for yourself therefore making more money for the bar and the customer will be happy and you may get a nice tip for suggesting and making them a superb drink. If it is a busy venue the customer will tend to order what they like that wont take a long time to prepare even still they may still order a cocktail and you have to understand where every product on your bar is so that you can make the best drink in the shortest time possible.

Products, you should know each product that you are selling otherwise you are a bad salesman, ask your bar manager or do some research to find out what each product is and remember it.

Glassware, you need to understand what product suits what glass, a glass of wine would not be suitable in a pint glass, unless the customer has requested it.

Cleanliness, keep the bar tidy and your personal appearance, most liqueur have a high sugar content if you don't clean as you go then forget about it. You will attract bar flies and other insects, the last thing your customer wants to see when they have a drink.

Great attitude towards work, the main problem in bartending in the UK I see is cockyness, its about having a good knowledge and a good team around you to make it work.

There is a great story I once heard not sure how true or if it is how close to the story I am but you'll get the idea.

Tom Collins inventor of one of the most classic cocktails went into a bar and asked for his Gin Collins at a different ratio to what the bartender was making it at, he refused. Collins had no reaction, he then ate his meal and the Bartender asked if he would like a coffee to which Collins accepted the Bartender then asked 'How would you like it?' Collins replied, 'Why don't you tell me'

Your going to get abuse in this industry but its just knowing how to deal with it that only comes with experience.

Last note, the difference between a 'bartender' and a 'barman/maid' is massive, someone who is a bartender looks after the bar they tend to it they have good product knowledge and great drink/spirit/liqueur knowledge but someone who is a barman/maid is somebody who is there for the money and doesn't really care if a customer has a problem with there Collins. I'm not saying that its a bad thing because again it depends what kind of venue your in!
