In most places, to get a paying job that isn't at a family owned business, you must be 14 to get a work permit. There are a few exceptions for 12 year olds, usually for shining shoes or selling newspapers. And the list of 'dangerous' jobs that can't be done by those under 18 is pretty specific. Your state's legal web site should have the specifics.
