What is the setting of the ranger's apprentice the burning bridge?

On a special mission for the Rangers, Will, his friend Horace, an apprentice knight, and the Ranger Gilan travel to a neighbouring country, Celtica. They discover that all the villagers are gone. Will and Horace wonder if all the villagers have been slain or captured, but Gilan thinks that the evil Lord Morgarath finally devised a plan to cross the mountain pass. If that were true, and the King wasn't warned, the country would be destroyed. Gilan goes to warn the King, and Will and Horace begin to follow a straggling Wargal force. On their way they come across Evanlyn, who claims to be a maid to an Araluen noble. When the three of them follow the Wargals they discover that a gigantic bridge is in the process of being built across The Fissure. They also discover that the King's army will be trapped on the Plains of Uthal, surrounded by Morgarath's army and a huge Skandian force. They decide that the only way to save the country is to burn the bridge. They manage to do this, but Will and Evanlyn are captured by Skandians as they keep the fire burning. Meanwhile, Gilan reaches the camp and as he reports Evanlyn to the King, we find that Evanlyn was actually Princess Cassandra, King Duncan's daughter, who was thought to be dead. She took her lady-in-waiting's identity. Horace rushes back to the battlefield in time for the fight to begin. The cavalry is destroying Morgarath's army, so he sends a retreat, then goes forward and challenges Halt to single combat. When the King forbids Halt from accepting, Horace challenges Morgarath instead. Morgarath is about to kill Horace, but, using the move that Gilan taught Will, called the double knife defense, Horace then, in a last-ditch attempt to win the battle, throws himself into the path of the battlehorse, in order to throw it off-balance. He is successful, and stabs Morgarath to win the battle. The Wargals start retreating back up Three Step Pass after it was discovered that Morgarath manipulated them with his mind. and the Skandians escape with Will and Evanlyn(Princess Cassandra). Halt tries to rescue them, he launches a one-man assault on the skiff, but he was too late. Halt promises Will that he will rescue him, which Halt tries to do in the next book.

will and horace and gilan go to Celtica and they find cassandra, king duncan's daughter. gilan goes away and when will and cassandra get captured, horace goes back to king duncan to warntheir army of the plan lord morgarath had in mind. halt chases will after the battle but fails to get him and cassandra because the skandians had taken them to their ship and was going to skandia.

Morgarath, the angry ,exiled lord of the bleak, barren Mountains of Rain and Night, has been waiting for fifteen years in his dark realm, carefully planning his revenge against the Kingdom of Araluen. His former fief, known as Gorlan, was long ago brought to ruin as a result of his unsuccessful rebellion against King Duncan. Now he silently plots to rebel again, rallying creatures known as Wargals to his side. Wargals have little will of their own, and are easy to control, therefore being suitable as soldiers in Morgarath's army. Now, after the fifteen years, Morgarath prepares to unleash his power and attempt to take the Kingdom once more.

In Araluen, in the fief Redmont, a special day has come for Will, called Choosing Day, where he becomes an apprentice to a craftmaster. Although Will's first choice was Battleschool, he becomes apprenticed to Halt of the Rangers. Rangers are the intelligence group of the country and specialize in long range weapons and the art of staying unseen. Will is trained in these skills as he prepares for the annual Ranger meeting called the Gathering which is where his skills will be tested. At the Gathering the Rangers receive a report that the Kalkara, vicious creatures under the control of Morgarath, have killed important Araluen figures.

Halt leaves to track down the Kalkara while Will rides for help. The Baron, Sir Rodney, and several others head out to slay the Kalkara and to save Halt. Finding where Halt is battling the Kalkara, Sir Rodney and the Baron manage to slay one, but are badly injured by the other. Suddenly, the last Kalkara is killed by Will with a flaming arrow that burns it because of its highly flammable fur. Back at his fief, Will is considered a hero and receives his bronze oakleaf medal which identifies him as a Rangers Apprentice. On the other hand, Araluen is preparing for a battle with Lord Morgarath.
