Usually nothing. The university will offer a package of assistantships, fellowships, and/or grants, which usually includes a tuition waiver. "Usually" is a key word here. Always ask before you accept a school's offer. One school I went to offered only $1500.00 in assistance-the rest had to be paid by the student. I transferred, and now I have to pay no tuition at all, and have a paid assistantship. The sign that the school's program is solid and committed to getting and keeping good students is the fact that they offer to help their students financially. Of course, you can also take out Stafford Loans (student loans), up to $138,500 for a lifetime maximum. This might help to cover a gap if the school's funding is not quite enough to get you through a semester.
