Farming. Most people throughout history have been farmers. Until about 1840, at least 95% of all the people were engaged in agriculture. Our modern surfeit of foodstuffs is a relatively recent phenomenon, produced by the mechanization of farming technologies.

Let's face it, when the highest technology you possess is an ox-drawn plow, you know that your civilization is only one bad harvest away from starvation.
