In the 1800's there were several jobs for the poor. Some of these jobs were doing laundry, sweeping taverns, and messenger work. The poor were often housekeepers for others of wealth in the 1800's. School teachers were in short supply, too.

Some women had jobs or worked for themselves in the 1800s. Most middle class and upper class women were what we now call home makers or house wives. Remember that most people lived on farms in those days. Farm women are farmers as much as the men, although they performed different functions on the farm.

Women often were teachers, nurses, servants, weavers, factory workers, seamstresses or worked on the land. Slowly but surely they started studying at universities and the amount of female doctors, scientists etc increased. There were even some female explorers.
